Hesiod ends Night’s catalogue with hard-hearted Eris (Strife), from whom alone spring the throng of quarrels, toils, and false oaths listed separately. In *Works and Days* he distinguishes a blameworthy Eris from a useful rivalry that stirs work; the *Theogony* names the harsh mother of ills. She is not yet the uninvited guest who casts the apple at Peleus’s wedding—that cyclic plot is another entry.
Here isolate only the Hesiodic birth: Eris is Night’s daughter, the personified Discord from whom further woes are born.
