Narrative

Homeric Hymn 21 addresses Apollo: the swan sings him to the beat of its wings as it lands on the bank beside the eddying river Peneus; the sweet-tongued singer holds him first and last with the lyre. The hymn asks the lord to rejoice. It is a miniature of Apolline music and Thessalian river landscape, without Delos, Python, or Telphusa. Catalogue it as Apollo’s short hymn-atom distinct from the great Delian–Pythian narrative.
