Before Jason walked into Iolcus with one sandal, the common tradition placed his childhood on Mount Pelion under Chiron. Pindar’s *Pythian* 4 has Jason tell Pelias that he spent twenty years in the centaur’s cave, never shaming his mother’s nurse nor the holy precepts of hospitality; Chiron named him Jason and reared him in righteousness. Apollodorus notes the same fosterage in a line: Aeson’s son was brought up by the Centaur. The episode is thin beside the Argo’s voyage, yet it matters for the hero’s character: Jason arrives not as a raw usurper’s victim but as a pupil of the same school that trained Achilles and Asclepius—civilized, instructed, and ready to claim his father’s house. When he crosses the Anaurus and loses the sandal, the education is already complete; the quest for the Golden Fleece begins from Chiron’s mountain, not from the palace nursery of Pelias.
