Narrative

While Theseus was trapped in the underworld with Pirithous, the Dioscuri invaded Attica to recover their sister Helen, whom Theseus had carried off as a child and lodged at Aphidna with his mother Aethra. Academus (or a local informant) revealed her whereabouts; the Tyndarids took Aphidna, recovered Helen, and carried Aethra away as Helen’s servant—she later appears among Helen’s attendants at Troy in Homeric tradition. Some Attic notices soften Theseus’s blame; the core is the Dioscuri’s successful rescue and the humiliation of Theseus’s household.
