Narrative

When Heracles came for the man-eating mares of the Thracian king Diomedes, he brought Abderus—son of Hermes in some reports, a Locrian favorite in others—as companion. While Heracles fought Diomedes, he left the mares with Abderus to guard; the beasts overpowered and killed him. Heracles, grieving, founded the city of Abdera beside Abderus’s tomb and instituted games in the youth’s honor. The aetiology ties a Greek colonial city on the Thracian coast to Heracles’s labor: Abdera’s name and early cult memory are purchased with the companion’s death.
