Narrative

Athena (as Mentor) brings Telemachus to sandy Pylos as Nestor and his sons offer a great sacrifice to Poseidon on the shore. Telemachus, shy at first, is urged to question the old king. Nestor receives him with hospitality, tells of the Achaean quarrel after Troy, the divided nostoi, Agamemnon’s murder as rumor reached Pylos, and Orestes’ vengeance—holding up that deed as a model. He cannot say where Odysseus is. At dawn Athena reveals her divinity by vanishing as a bird; Nestor vows offerings and sends Telemachus onward to Sparta with his son Peisistratus and a chariot. Catalogue the Pylian visit as the Telemachy’s first inquiry-station, apart from the Ithacan departure and the Spartan sequel.
