Narrative

After Dionysus’s gift of wine leads to Icarius’s murder by drunken shepherds, his daughter Erigone hangs herself and the dog Maera pines. In the astral handbooks the gods set them in the sky: Icarius as Boötes the Ploughman (or Bear-ward near Ursa Major), Erigone as Virgo, Maera as the Dog-star that brings the heat. The constellation thus freezes the Attic tragedy into the seasonal sky—vintage, heat, and mourning bound together.
