When Poseidon sought Amphitrite as wife, she fled him (to Atlas’s daughters or into the Ocean’s depths in variant summaries). A dolphin tracked her, persuaded her, and brought her back to the sea-god. Poseidon married Amphitrite—queen of the Nereids in Homeric genealogy—and placed the helpful dolphin among the stars as Delphinus, a small constellation near Aquila. The catasterism aetiologizes both the dolphin’s sacredness to Poseidon and a sky-sign of the marine wedding. Keep this apart from Arion’s historical-legendary dolphin ride and from Homeric notices that simply name Amphitrite as Poseidon’s consort without the chase.
