Narrative

When Zeus loved Europa of Tyre, he took the form of a tame white bull (or sent such a bull), carried her from Phoenicia across the sea to Crete, and there revealed himself. In the catasterismic tradition the bull—whether Zeus’s form or the animal he used—was placed among the stars as Taurus, memorial of the crossing and of Europa’s Cretan queenship. Some astral writers instead connect Taurus with Io, the cow-maiden of Argos; Eratosthenes and Hyginus preserve the Europa strand as primary for the zodiac bull.
