Pausanias’s Messenian books make Aristomenes the paramount hero of Messenian resistance to Sparta. In the second Messenian War tradition he raids Laconia, thrice offers a trophy of a hundred slain (hekatomphonia) to Zeus Ithomatas, escapes capture by leaping into the Ceadas chasm—saved by a fox or divine aid—and finally, after Messenia falls, withdraws to exile (Rhodes in some notices) while his fame remains the charter of Messenian courage. The narrative blends history and legend; Pausanias reports local tombs, dedications, and songs.
