Herodotus, scorning certain maps and tales, mentions Abaris the Hyperborean who was said to have carried the arrow of Apollo over the whole earth without eating food. Later Pythagorean biography elaborates Abaris as a wonder-working priest who meets Pythagoras, gives him the arrow, and learns wisdom in return.
