Narrative

Theras, a Cadmeid of Theban stock, was maternal uncle and regent to the young Spartan kings Eurysthenes and Procles (sons of Aristodemus). When the twins came of age, Theras refused to be ruled by them and led a colony to the island Calliste, already inhabited by descendants of Membliarus (a Phoenician linked to Cadmus’s search for Europa). He settled among them; the island took his name—Thera. Herodotus ties this Cadmeid–Lacedaemonian venture to the later Theran colonization of Cyrene: the same island’s Minyan and Euphemid memories feed Battus’s Delphic mission.
