Narrative

In the black night of the Argonauts’ return, Jason prayed to Apollo; the god drew his bow and shot a shaft of blazing light that revealed a small island ahead. The heroes landed and made a sanctuary to Apollo Aegletes (“the Radiant” / “Gleaming”). They named the island Anaphe (“Apparition”), because it had appeared out of darkness. Callimachus preserves playful aetiologies for later jesting festivals on Anaphe linked to the Argonauts’ rough water and scarce provisions. The episode is a classic Argonautic island-aetiology: divine light, sudden land, new cult title.
